Teitel, Jacob
(1851-1939)
   Russian jurist and communal worker. He was born in Cherny Ostrov, Podolia. He was one of the first Jews in Russia to be employed in the judicial service during the czarist regime. Devoted to communal work, he helped Jews who were oppressed by the authorities, and was a founder of a relief enterprise which supported Jewish youth. In 1921 he left the USSR and became president of the Union of Russian Jews in Germany. When the Nazis came to power, he moved to France, where his memoirs were published.
